Reflections
on the performance by The Cape Town Male Voice Choir.
The
hall was packed to hear this popular men's choir together with the newly formed
Stilbaai Mannekoor under the leadership of Naomi van Schalkwyk. The Mannekoor opened the evening with five charming
songs which they performed with enthusiasm and self-confidence
belying the fact that the choir is barely a year old. Thereafter the
Cape Town Male Voice Choir treated the audience to a program of
rousing choral music, expertly performed with great feeling and
precision under the professional leadership of their highly qualified
conductor and accompanist. Their program also included a work
especially composed for the choir which they first performed at the
Welch World Choir Festival in London in 2012. This work consists of
adaptations of African music and also includes a sound picture of an
African thunderstorm which astounded the audience. The evening was
concluded by the massed choirs performing the well-known
“Stout-hearted Men” by Sigmund Romberg and Oscar Hammerstein II.
The audience, throughout the performance showed their appreciation by
loud and long applause, which in turn spurred the choirs on to an
even better performance. Thank you Stilbaai for being such an
enthusiastic and appreciative audience.
Matthew
